In a letter to her sister Mary Cassatt describes a picture she "dares not show anyone": a mother secretly reading, while the child sleeps on her lap, a letter from a man who is not her husband. The canvas reappeared in 2024 in Philadelphia, rolled up in a Cassatt family trunk. The green garden light, the hand tight on the paper, the child who knows nothing. Sold for $34 million in 2025.
